Yesterday we had our annual retreat at my office. We discussed many things including how our profession's value is underrated and how easy it is to get angry about it. My boss (whom I greatly admire) said at one point, "Life is hard. Life is hard, get over it." She wasn't being cruel, she was making a point that we all have external influences in our lives that we have no control over. It's very easy to let those things drag us down and make us feel all woe is me about everything. But you know what? Life is hard, it's hard for everyone and in their own way. We can't change other people, or maybe we can but it's very difficult and time consuming to do so. What we can change is ourselves. We can change our perceptions. So, life is hard. Get over it and move on. Get on with doing the things you love and enjoy. To quote her warmly and accurately she said, "be a duck."
So I'm going to try to be more of a duck when things get hard.
